HEDGE-IoT: Digital Transformation in the Energy Sector
HEDGE-IoT is an innovative, EU-funded project operating within the Horizon Europe programme, dedicated to revolutionizing energy systems through advanced digitalization. The initiative introduces a novel Digital Framework designed to deploy Internet of Things (IoT) assets across all levels of the energy system, from behind-the-meter installations up to Transmission System Operator (TSO) infrastructure. This framework integrates intelligence into both edge and cloud layers by utilizing advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) tools.
The core of HEDGE-IoT's innovation lies in bridging the cloud/edge continuum, facilitating federated applications managed by sophisticated computational orchestration solutions. This approach significantly upgrades the hosting capacity for Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and unlocks previously untapped flexibility potential within energy grids. By enhancing grid resilience and creating new market opportunities, HEDGE-IoT promotes advancements in IoT standardization, enabling diversified and interoperable energy services over scalable, highly distributed data platforms and infrastructure.
The multi-dimensional framework is built upon four key pillars: the Technology Facilitator Pillar, which leverages computational sharing for AI/ML federated learning and swarm computing applications; the Interoperability Pillar, utilizing leading-edge architectures like Data Spaces; the Standardization Pillar, ensuring seamless communication and data exchange using widely adopted standards such as SAREF; and the Digital Energy Ecosystem Enabling Pillar, focused on creating a resilient ecosystem for increased RES integration. HEDGE-IoT aims to foster inclusivity and cultivate trust among stakeholders through ethical IoT practices, driving scalability, replicability, and innovation, including through Open Call mechanisms for innovators and SMEs.
