Cookie Policy

Short version: Bywatts sets no advertising or analytics cookies, and no tracking of any kind. The only thing we store on your device is a record of your own cookie-consent choice, so we can remember it. This page explains that, and the consent framework we keep ready in case optional cookies are ever added.

What cookies are

A cookie is a small file a website stores in your browser. “Local storage” is a similar mechanism. Both can be used for essential functions (remembering a setting) or for tracking (following you across sites). Bywatts uses neither for tracking.

What we currently use

Exactly one item, and only if you interact with the consent banner:

NameTypePurposeDurationCategory
bw_consentFirst-party cookie + local storageRemembers your cookie-consent choice so we don't ask again~6 monthsStrictly necessary

We set no analytics cookies, no advertising cookies, and no third-party tracking cookies. If you never open the consent banner, we store nothing at all.

The consent framework

Even though nothing optional runs today, we ship a working consent mechanism so that any future optional feature is off until you allow it. It offers three categories:

  • Strictly necessary — always on; covers the consent record itself. Cannot be switched off because the site cannot function without honoring your choice.
  • Analytics — off by default. If we ever add privacy-respecting usage analytics, it will only run after you turn this on.
  • Functional — off by default. Reserved for optional conveniences (for example, remembering a preferred map view).

Scripts in these optional categories are held inert until you grant the matching category, so nothing runs behind your back.

How to manage your choice

You can change your choice at any time using the control — it appears here and in the site footer. You can also clear the bw_consent cookie and local-storage entry through your browser settings, which resets the banner. We honor the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal automatically.

Connections that aren't cookies

Map tiles on the map page are served by a third-party CDN. These do not set tracking cookies through us, but loading them does reveal your IP address to that provider, as any web request does. (Fonts are served first-party from our own domain, so no font provider is involved.) We list every third party in full in the Privacy Policy.
