The ICONIC Consortium is an innovative project funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Actions, the UKRI Horizon Europe Guarantee scheme, and Innossuisse. Its core ambition is to develop groundbreaking digital and physical tools for the integrated control of wind farms. This initiative aims to achieve fundamental advancements by considering the entire physical system, from farm-level dynamics to individual turbine and component interactions, with a specific focus on complex aerodynamic phenomena among turbines.
The project introduces a suite of advanced solutions, including AI-based, data-powered, and physics-informed integrated wind farm control systems designed to enhance operational efficiency, stability, resilience, security, and reliability. Complementing this, ICONIC is developing sophisticated digital twins for control enhancement and awareness, utilizing a hybrid approach that merges physics-based models with operational data. Furthermore, it focuses on next-generation wind farm simulation tools, leveraging AI and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for real-time, high-fidelity flow feature analysis, all designed with an open-source philosophy.
Key research objectives include investigating turbine control solutions for load reduction across entire wind farms and developing AI-powered lifetime management strategies to reduce the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) by integrating digital twins and control systems for remaining useful life assessment of critical components. The consortium rigorously validates its integrated control systems and digital twins through extensive studies, including high-fidelity simulation models, experiments at national-level wind tunnels, analysis of historical operational data, and real-world field tests at operational wind farms, aiming to bring these innovations to Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 5.
