The Rural Energy Access Lab (REAL) is an independent, not-for-profit catalyst dedicated to accelerating universal energy access in rural Sub-Saharan Africa. Addressing the significant challenge where over half a billion people are projected to remain without electricity by 2030, REAL champions innovative Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) models to overcome the limitations of traditional, high-upfront-cost sales models.

REAL operates by collaborating with governments and development partners across Sub-Saharan Africa to design, fund, and implement large-scale EaaS programs. This approach treats solar systems as essential infrastructure rather than individual consumer goods, enabling rapid, cost-efficient deployment to entire communities, particularly those in hard-to-reach areas. The model prioritizes social inclusion and long-term affordability by removing upfront costs, eliminating lump-sum payments and credit checks, and offering significantly lower monthly fees through smart subsidies.

Furthermore, REAL's framework emphasizes speed through bulk procurement and installation of standardized systems, ensuring swifter implementation compared to individual sales. Sustainability is a core tenet, with the EaaS model guaranteeing long-term system performance and maintenance. This incentivizes operators to utilize durable, built-for-service products, thereby reducing failures and minimizing electronic waste, while also ensuring programs are cash-flow positive without continuous subsidies.

Through its Catalytic Programme Facility, REAL assists governments and partners in scaling sustainable electrification, complemented by a Market Development Facility that establishes best practices, industry standards, research, and advisory services. With successful programs already impacting tens of thousands in Malawi, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Madagascar, REAL aims to mobilize significant financing to launch sustainable pre-grid electrification programs in 4-10 additional countries, fostering a continent-wide movement towards equitable energy access.
