Kahramaa: Powering Qatar's Sustainable Energy Future

Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) serves as the exclusive transmission and distribution system owner and operator for electricity and water across Qatar. The corporation is at the forefront of the nation's commitment to a sustainable energy future, actively driving the transition to renewable energy through pivotal initiatives such as the Qatar National Renewable Energy Strategy (QNRES) and its innovative distributed solar energy service, BeSolar.

Under the comprehensive QNRES, Kahramaa is dedicated to significantly expanding the utilization of renewable energy sources, with a primary focus on solar photovoltaic (PV) technology. The strategy outlines an ambitious target to deploy a utility-scale renewable energy capacity of 4 GW by 2030, aiming to elevate the proportion of renewable energy in Qatar's overall energy mix from 5% to 18%. Additionally, Kahramaa is working to achieve 200 MW of distributed renewable energy generation, which empowers customers—including residential, commercial, and industrial entities—to install solar PV systems for self-consumption and export surplus power back to the national grid.

The BeSolar program is a cornerstone of these efforts, providing a robust incentive for users to adopt solar energy systems through a net billing mechanism. This system allows customers to first consume their self-generated solar electricity, with any excess energy sent to the Kahramaa network credited against future bills. This initiative not only leads to reduced electricity costs for consumers but also aligns with national strategic objectives to mitigate CO2 emissions, enhance environmental sustainability, improve air quality, and bolster grid reliability. Kahramaa further supports this transition by providing essential technical guidelines and maintaining lists of approved equipment, suppliers, and qualified contractors to facilitate widespread solar PV system adoption.
