TWAIN is an Horizon Europe project dedicated to advancing the reliability and cost-effectiveness of wind power plant design and operation. Running from November 2023 to October 2027, this initiative places a strong emphasis on critical aspects such as system stability, security, and environmental considerations, integrating coordinated solutions for wind farm control and asset management. The project is a collaborative effort involving 12 partners from eight European countries.

It aligns with ambitious decarbonization goals by leveraging the transformative influence of artificial intelligence (AI) and digitalization. TWAIN seeks to drive the energy transition and facilitate the seamless integration of wind farm control technology processes into the future energy system's operation and design. The project aims to support wind farm owners and operators in their decision-making for system-wide optimized performance, achieved through a five-level integration strategy. This includes merging diverse data across wind farm life stages, AI-enhanced integration of multi-disciplinary processes, and the application of multi-level controllers and scenario analyses to ensure a balanced coexistence of wind power plants with their environment and society. Ultimately, TWAIN strives to develop a modern data collection and analysis environment, digitalize prediction tools for wind farm control, quantify economic, social, and environmental implications, and optimize multi-objective, value-based Wind Farm Control (WFC) through multi-level controller integration and refined wind farm design. It also aims to facilitate the testing and adoption of its open-source decision support environment for wind power asset management.
