The AIRE project is an innovative initiative spearheaded by CENER, focusing on advancing the understanding of atmospheric impacts on wind energy systems. This collaborative European Union-funded project, operating under the Horizon Europe program, addresses critical limitations in traditional wind turbine models that often neglect the complex physics and aerodynamics of atmospheric wind flows at high altitudes, as well as the detrimental effects of specific weather conditions like precipitation or sand. These oversights can significantly reduce turbine efficiency and complicate the accurate prediction of energy outputs and turbine lifespan.
AIRE's core objective is to overcome these challenges by meticulously investigating the influence of diverse climate conditions across various terrains and altitudes. To achieve this, the project gathers extensive data from four experimental sites and four commercial wind farms. This rich dataset forms the foundation for developing sophisticated new numerical models and advanced design tools specifically engineered to maximize wind energy efficiency across all weather conditions.
Over its four-year tenure, the AIRE project is poised to deliver substantial benefits to the wind energy sector. Expected outcomes include a significant reduction in investor risk, demonstrable decreases in manufacturing and operational costs for wind energy assets, and the implementation of enhanced control measures to mitigate blade erosion. By integrating comprehensive atmospheric understanding into wind turbine design and operation, AIRE aims to bolster the reliability, performance, and longevity of next-generation wind energy infrastructure, supporting the EU's ambitious targets for long-term structural change in energy systems.
