The Berlinguette Group, based at the University of British Columbia, is a multidisciplinary research powerhouse dedicated to accelerating decarbonization through innovative technological development. Comprised of experts in synthetic, inorganic and physical chemistry, chemical, electrical and materials engineering, physics, data science, machine learning, and robotics, the group strives to discover energy solutions for the next generation. Their core focus involves designing and building advanced reactors. These reactors are engineered to convert carbon dioxide into useful products, drive low-temperature nuclear fusion, and electrify key industrial sectors such as fuels, chemicals, and cement production.
The group's research encompasses several critical areas, including reactive carbon capture, advanced nuclear fusion, the electrification of the chemicals industry, and the development of carbon-neutral building materials. They actively explore innovative electrochemical processes, such as the direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide from water electrolysis without H2 gas, and the efficient conversion of bicarbonate into carbon monoxide. Furthermore, the Berlinguette Group pioneers autonomous materials science, utilizing self-driving laboratories and automated experiments to rapidly discover and optimize clean energy materials, including highly conductive coatings and perovskite photovoltaics. Their work directly addresses global energy challenges, aiming to transform industrial processes and mitigate climate change.
