Blue Mackerel Offshore Wind Project
The Blue Mackerel Offshore Wind Project is a pioneering initiative positioned to become one of the first offshore wind farms to deliver sustainable energy to Australian homes and industries. Located off the coast of Brataualung and Tatungalung Country, Gippsland, Victoria, approximately 10 kilometers from the shore between Seaspray and Woodside, this project marks a significant step in Australia's transition towards a low-emissions future. It has been granted a seven-year feasibility license for a 163 km² area, underlining its strategic importance in the nation's renewable energy landscape.
With a planned capacity of 1 Gigawatt (GW), the Blue Mackerel project is anticipated to commence commercial operations by 2032, providing green power to over half a million Victorian homes. This substantial contribution will not only help decarbonize the energy grid but also generate lasting environmental, economic, and social benefits for the region and the wider Australian community. The project's development is spearheaded by Parkwind, an integrated offshore wind business with a decade of experience in developing, financing, and operating offshore wind farms across Europe. Since April 2024, Parkwind has been fully owned by JERA Nex, a global entity investing in, owning, and operating a diverse portfolio of offshore wind, onshore wind, solar, and battery storage projects totaling 3.4 GW.
The project timeline outlines a phased approach, starting with pre-feasibility studies and assessments in 2023-2024, followed by detailed design and approvals between 2024 and 2029, and a two-to-three-year construction phase beginning around 2029. Commercial operations are projected to last up to 40 years. Blue Mackerel is committed to a genuine partnership with the Gunaikurnai people, the Traditional Owners of the land and sea country where the project is planned, aiming for mutual benefit and enhanced environmental stewardship for future generations.
