Blykalla is a pioneering Swedish deep-tech company, established in 2013 as a spin-off from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. The company is at the forefront of developing and industrializing advanced small modular reactors (SMRs), specifically its proprietary Swedish Advanced Lead Reactor (SEALER) concept. Leveraging over 25 years of foundational research into lead-cooled reactor systems, Blykalla aims to deliver a clean, safe, and scalable baseload energy solution that perfectly complements intermittent renewable sources like solar and wind power.
The core of Blykalla's innovation lies in its lead-cooled SMR technology. This design achieves inherently high safety within a compact format, enabling a simplified, cost-effective design suitable for mass production. A critical breakthrough is their patented aluminum alloyed steel, which provides unparalleled corrosion resistance, overcoming a significant challenge associated with using lead as a nuclear coolant. This unique approach ensures that the lead coolant also naturally shields against radiation and, with a high boiling temperature of 1700°C, eliminates the risk of coolant loss, fostering a low-pressure system without safety concerns from pressure drops.
Blykalla's reactors are designed to be passively safe, meaning they maintain stability and cool residual heat without requiring external electricity, power, or human intervention. This intrinsic "walk-away" safety feature, combined with the self-cooling function through natural lead convection and the coolant's radiation shielding properties, allows for a highly compact and serially factory-producible unit. Their SMRs, typically producing 10-100 MW per unit, are ideal for flexible deployment, significantly reducing construction costs by up to 60% and time by approximately 70% compared to traditional Generation III plants, thereby de-risking projects.
Beyond electricity generation, Blykalla's technology is poised to decarbonize hard-to-abate industrial sectors through new use cases, including providing process heat, enabling clean hydrogen production, and facilitating water desalination. The company is actively collaborating with global utilities and partners to realize Europe's first advanced SMR, marking a significant step towards a fossil-free energy future.
