The German Pellet Institute (DEPI) was established in 2008 as a subsidiary of the German Energy Wood and Pellet Association (DEPV), with its headquarters located in Berlin. DEPI serves as a central hub for communication, information, public relations, and marketing dedicated to heating solutions utilizing wood pellets. It functions as a vital communication platform and competence center, engaging with media, industry, and scientific representatives to consistently raise public awareness and provide comprehensive information to consumers regarding wood pellet heating.

The institute is instrumental in initiating and coordinating supra-regional initiatives, serving as a primary point of contact for political bodies, industry stakeholders, and trade professionals. DEPI also fosters collaborations with other scientific institutions and dispatches expert speakers on topics related to modern wood fuel heating. A significant achievement includes the development of the ENplus certification system for wood pellets in 2010, which ensures high-quality standards for the fuel.

Furthermore, DEPI plays a crucial role in professional development, offering specialized training courses for the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and plumbing (SHK) trade since 2011, certifying over 1,500 "pellet specialists." These specialists are equipped to provide qualified advice on the professional installation of new pellet heating systems. The institute also provides valuable resources for both consumers and professionals, including tools to find certified heating installers, locate ENplus certified dealers, access funding programs, and navigate comprehensive information on pellet production, pricing, storage, and environmental benefits. Through these efforts, DEPI promotes wood pellets as an economic, climate-friendly, comfortable, future-proof, and independent energy source for modern heating.
