Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC): Driving Sustainable Water and Electricity Supply in the UAE
Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) stands as the sole procurer and supplier of water and electricity within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and extending to other Emirates. Established in November 2018 as a successor to ADWEC, EWEC is a pivotal subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Power Corporation (ADPower) and an integral part of ADQ, one of the region’s largest holding companies. The company is charged with the critical mandate of ensuring the continuous, reliable, and efficient supply of these essential resources to consumers.
EWEC is responsible for the comprehensive and integrated coordination of planning, forecasting, purchasing, and system dispatch services for water and electricity. This involves meticulously balancing bulk supply and demand for distribution companies in both the short and long term. A core aspect of EWEC’s strategy is its commitment to sustainability, actively identifying opportunities for the development of advanced water and power generation facilities, with a strong focus on sustainable and renewable technologies.
Currently, EWEC procures supply from a diverse portfolio of 16 operational plants across the UAE. This portfolio encompasses conventional power plants alongside cutting-edge facilities such as Noor Abu Dhabi and Al Dhafra Solar PV, which rank among the world’s largest single-site solar power plants. Additionally, EWEC integrates power from the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, the first nuclear energy plant in the Arab World, significantly contributing to decarbonization. Its advanced desalination infrastructure includes the Taweelah Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant, recognized as the largest RO water desalination facility globally, alongside other major complexes like Al Shuweihat and Umm Al Nar.
Aligned with the ambitious UAE Energy Strategy 2050, EWEC is dedicated to increasing the contribution of clean energy to 50 percent of the total energy mix and achieving a 70 percent reduction in the carbon footprint of power generation. This commitment is evidenced by ongoing and planned projects, including the Mirfa 2 (M2) RO Independent Water Project, the Waste-to-Energy Power Plant developed in collaboration with Tadweer Group, and future renewable initiatives like the Zarraf Solar PV and the UAE Wind Programme. Through strategic collaborations and continuous innovation, EWEC remains at the forefront of evolving water and power supply management, delivering secure and sustainable solutions vital for the UAE’s growth and energy transition.
