About FLOW

FLOW, an initiative funded by the European Union, is dedicated to revolutionizing the wind energy sector through advanced prediction methods for production statistics and load performance. The project specifically targets modern GW-scale and 400-meter tall offshore and onshore wind energy systems, aiming to surpass existing methodologies with significantly higher accuracy and confidence. This crucial work is designed to mitigate uncertainties, enhance productivity, stabilize power grids, and ultimately reduce the levelized cost of energy (LCoE).

A core objective of FLOW is to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing within the renewable energy industry. It aims to establish an open-source knowledge hub that will benefit the entire sector, facilitating joint optimization efforts between wind energy developers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). By creating a shared platform for insights and tools, FLOW seeks to accelerate innovation and disseminate best practices across Europe and beyond.

To achieve these ambitious goals, FLOW focuses on deepening the understanding of complex atmospheric flow physics. This includes meticulously studying the intricate interactions between microscale wind farms and larger mesoscale systems, addressing critical phenomena such as wind farm global blockage, farm-to-farm interaction, and turbulence influenced by challenging topography and wake effects in complex terrains. This enhanced knowledge forms the foundation for developing and rigorously validating sophisticated simulation tools.

These robust simulation tools, once validated, are engineered for seamless adoption by the industry. Their implementation is expected to lead to substantial economic and societal benefits by reducing financial uncertainties, bolstering the reliability of wind energy systems, and maximizing power production from wind farms. FLOW’s efforts are instrumental in driving Europe's green transition, strengthening its leadership in wind energy technology, and paving the way for a more efficient, reliable, and cleaner energy future.
