Fraunhofer-Institut für Umwelt-, Sicherheits- und Energietechnik UMSICHT, also known as Fraunhofer UMSICHT, is a pioneering research institution dedicated to fostering a sustainable world. The institute is committed to understanding and driving the necessary changes for a successful transition to a sustainable society, focusing on transforming raw material and energy supply, and shifting from linear to circular economic systems. Their research makes concrete contributions to achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.

At the core of Fraunhofer UMSICHT's work are four main research pillars: Circular Economy, Carbon Management, Green Hydrogen, and Local Energy Systems. In Circular Economy, the institute develops innovative materials and processes for the circular use of resources, from laboratory experiments to industrial implementation, encompassing areas like pyrolysis of plastics, bio-based materials, and water management in production processes.

Under Carbon Management, Fraunhofer UMSICHT researches and supports sustainable methods for carbon utilization, including CO2 binding in building materials, direct resistive heating of chemical reactors, and the sustainable production and use of methanol. Their Green Hydrogen initiatives focus on the electrochemical production, utilization, and storage of green hydrogen, involving the development and manufacturing of components and stacks for electrolyzers and fuel cells.

Finally, the Local Energy Systems division develops concepts and technologies for the comprehensive transformation of energy supply in districts and industrial sectors. This includes implementing climate-neutral energy systems for industry, optimizing energy supply systems, and developing sustainable energy concepts for industrial and commercial areas, alongside advanced battery technologies like flow and metal-air batteries. Through these concerted efforts, Fraunhofer UMSICHT acts as a key enabler for a cleaner, safer, and more energy-efficient future.
