Galveston LNG Bunker Port (GLBP) is a prominent joint venture dedicated to developing, constructing, and operating a state-of-the-art liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in the Galveston Bay area. This facility, strategically located on the Texas City Ship Channel within a major industrial zone, is designed to serve the burgeoning clean-energy marine fuels market across the U.S. Gulf Coast. GLBP aims to become the first dedicated small-scale LNG facility in the region, providing critical bunkering services to LNG-powered vessels.
The company's primary objective is to supply LNG via fuel barges to a diverse range of maritime clients, including car carriers, intracoastal vessels, cruise ships, container ships, tankers, and bulk carriers, as well as for LNGC cool downs. Its optimal location allows it to efficiently serve major ports such as Port Houston, the Port of Galveston, and the Port of Texas City. By delivering clean-energy marine fuel, GLBP significantly contributes to the maritime industry's ongoing decarbonization efforts.
GLBP's project emphasizes safety and environmental stewardship, utilizing proven modular technology and rigorous safety processes. The adoption of LNG as a marine fuel by GLBP offers substantial environmental benefits compared to traditional heavy fuel oil and marine distillates, including a 99% reduction in sulfur oxide (SOx), a 96% reduction in particulate matter, a 90% reduction in nitrous oxide (NOx), and a 25-30% reduction in greenhouse gases. This commitment to cleaner operations directly improves air quality in the region and supports global sustainability goals. The initial investment in the project is estimated between $250-$300 million, creating significant economic impact through construction and operational jobs.
