The National Center for Waste Management (MWAN) is a pivotal governmental entity established in Saudi Arabia in April 2019 by Council of Ministers order No. 457. Its primary mandate is to meticulously regulate and supervise waste management activities across the Kingdom, concurrently stimulating investment and elevating service quality. Operating on the foundational principles of the Circular Economy, MWAN is dedicated to achieving sustainable development goals, enhancing environmental protection, and improving the overall quality of life for the community.

MWAN's comprehensive responsibilities encompass strategic planning and development, robust regulation and governance, and the issuance of licenses and oversight to ensure industry compliance. The Center is actively involved in fostering public awareness and building capabilities within the waste management sector. Furthermore, it champions financial sustainability and incentivizes private sector investment, leveraging digital transformation and artificial intelligence to modernize operations and achieve efficiency.

The Center plays a crucial role in international collaborations, such as its partnership with the German company Messe München to host IFAT Saudi Arabia. This significant event serves as a leading international platform for showcasing cutting-edge solutions in waste management, recycling, and the water sector. Through its strategic national waste management plan, MWAN aims to achieve ambitious targets by 2040, including substantial reductions in CO2 equivalent emissions, the development of numerous waste treatment facilities, significant contributions to the national GDP, and the creation of tens of thousands of job opportunities, thereby securing a cleaner and more sustainable future for Saudi Arabia.
