Revolutionizing DC Solutions in Power Systems

Shift2DC (SHIFT to Direct Current) is a pioneering Horizon Europe project, coordinated by the Portuguese R&D Institute INESC-ID, dedicated to fundamentally transforming the application of Direct Current (DC) solutions within modern power systems. This ambitious initiative aims to foster the development of smarter, more efficient, and environmentally friendly energy infrastructures across Europe by revisiting and advancing the role of DC power.

Comprehensive Development and Validation

The project leverages the collective expertise of a diverse consortium comprising thirty-three partners, including affiliated and associated partners, from twelve countries. These partners collaborate to establish comprehensive guidelines and a strategic roadmap for the widespread integration of DC technologies in various energy scenarios. The core objective is to rigorously develop, test, and demonstrate the technical feasibility, economic viability through detailed cost-benefit analyses, and the full life cycle and environmental impact of the proposed DC solutions.

Real-World Demonstrations and Applications

Shift2DC's innovative strategies and solutions are being validated through four real-world demonstrators strategically located across three European nations. These include two sites in Germany, focusing on critical datacenter and industrial environments; one in France, dedicated to advanced building applications; and one in Portugal, addressing specific challenges within port infrastructure. These demonstrators are crucial for testing both Medium Voltage DC (MVDC) and Low Voltage DC (LVDC) solutions, showcasing their potential to reshape electricity usage in critical sectors and contribute significantly to the ongoing energy transition.
