Smart Power India (SPI), established in 2015 by The Rockefeller Foundation, serves as a crucial agency dedicated to implementing the Smart Power Initiative across rural India. The organization is committed to tackling energy poverty by extending reliable electricity access to underserved communities, aiming to transform livelihoods and foster economic development.

SPI primarily achieves its objectives through impact-driven rural electrification, notably by deploying decentralized renewable energy (DRE) mini-grids. This approach has successfully brought electricity to 473 villages across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand, directly benefiting over 350,000 individuals and supporting more than 2,400 electricity-based micro-enterprises incubated within these villages. Beyond direct electrification, SPI also focuses on capacity-building programs to empower local communities and entrepreneurs, including women.

Furthermore, Smart Power India actively engages in policy advocacy to create an enabling environment for the mini-grid sector, aligning incentives among government bodies, investors, and Energy Service Companies (ESCOs). The organization also collaborates with government entities to enhance the quality and reliability of on-grid electricity supply. Through these multi-faceted efforts, SPI advocates for an energy services framework that champions strategic public-private partnerships, ensuring sustainable and dependable electricity access and catalyzing significant socio-economic growth in rural India, benefiting businesses, irrigation, healthcare, and educational facilities.
