The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is a federally owned corporation in the United States, established by Congress in 1933 to address critical environmental, economic, and technological challenges across the Tennessee Valley region. As the nation's largest government-owned power provider, TVA delivers reliable, affordable, and increasingly clean electricity to 10 million people across a vast 80,000 square-mile service territory, encompassing most of Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Virginia. It supplies power to 153 local power companies and 61 directly served customers, including 54 industrial entities and 7 military and federal installations.

Operating as a self-financing entity, TVA funds its operations primarily through electricity sales and power system bond financing, without relying on tax money or generating profit. The authority manages its extensive power system through continuous investments in infrastructure, innovative technologies, and a steadfast commitment to operational excellence. TVA utilizes a diverse generation portfolio, featuring the nation's third-largest nuclear fleet, 29 power-generating dams, a pumped-storage facility, solar energy installations, and both coal-powered and gas generation sites, having delivered a record 34,577 megawatts on January 17, 2024.

Beyond energy provision, TVA is a dedicated steward of the region’s natural resources. It manages 293,000 acres of public land and 11,000 miles of shoreline, undertaking comprehensive conservation, stewardship, and biodiversity initiatives. The agency also strategically manages the 652-mile Tennessee River for flood control, hydropower generation, water quality protection, navigation support, and recreation, contributing approximately $12 billion in economic activity annually. Furthermore, TVA's economic development team actively partners with local power companies, economic development organizations, and federal agencies to attract new investments and foster job growth, successfully bringing 100,000 new jobs to the seven-state region over the last five years.
