Advancing Geothermal Energy in Italy and Europe

The Unione Geotermica Italiana (UGI) is an independent, non-partisan, apolitical, and non-profit association dedicated to advancing the understanding and application of geothermal energy across Italy and within the broader European context. UGI plays a pivotal role in promoting the utilization, research, and streamlining of regulatory and administrative procedures, aiming to facilitate significant growth in all facets of geothermal application. This includes geothermal power production, direct heat uses, and advanced heat pump systems.

The association is committed to disseminating accurate and comprehensive knowledge regarding the technical, economic, environmental, and social aspects of geothermal systems. This outreach targets the general public, industry professionals, and key political and administrative stakeholders, covering the entire lifecycle of geothermal energy from resource characterization and exploration to system design, technological advancements, and sustainable operational management. Through these efforts, UGI ensures that geothermal resources are utilized efficiently and responsibly.

To effectively achieve its objectives, UGI has cultivated a robust national network of scientific and educational collaborations, establishing agreements with various university departments across Italy. These regional hubs are crucial for managing local projects, fostering relationships with regional institutions, local authorities, industrial organizations, and technical-scientific and cultural associations. They also maintain close connections with UGI members and lead localized initiatives to promote geothermal energy, thereby contributing significantly to Italy's energy transition. Additionally, UGI engages in extensive international collaboration with prominent organizations such as the International Geothermal Association (IGA), the European Renewable Energy Council (EREC), the European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC), and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), as well as with national associations in other countries pursuing similar goals.
