Virunga Energies: Integrated Electricity Utility in DRC

Virunga Energies is a fully integrated electricity utility company operating in North-Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Established in 2014 as the first privately-owned company under the liberalization of the DRC's electricity sector, it functions as a for-profit entity with a strong social purpose. All profits generated by Virunga Energies are reinvested into developing its clean energy assets or contributing to the conservation of Virunga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, underscoring its commitment to both sustainable energy and environmental stewardship.

The company specializes in providing clean, reliable, and affordable hydroelectric power to local communities within and around Virunga National Park. It manages the entire energy value chain, from building and operating its own hydroelectric power plants to constructing and maintaining extensive transmission and distribution networks, and finally, marketing electricity directly to end-consumers. With a current operational capacity of over 43 MW, Virunga Energies is actively expanding, targeting 100 MW by 2040 to meet the region's growing demand.

Currently, Virunga Energies operates four key hydroelectric power plants: Mutwanga (1.4 MW), Matebe (13.1 MW), Luviro (14.6 MW), and Rwanguba (14 MW, with an additional 14 MW phase expected by 2027). Its transmission and distribution network spans over 500 km across diverse geographies including Rutshuru, Goma, and Lubero. The company serves a significant customer base, connecting over 42,000 households and 2,800 businesses. Furthermore, it provides essential free electricity to public infrastructures such as lighting, hospitals, and schools in 20 villages and the city of Goma, while also contributing to improved water supply for 700,000 inhabitants.

Active development projects include the construction of the additional 14 MW capacity at the Rwanguba hydroplant and the establishment of new high-voltage substations to bolster grid stability and reach. These expansions are crucial to extending reliable power access to an estimated 3.8 million inhabitants across nine cities in North-Kivu, thereby playing a pivotal role in fostering comprehensive socio-economic development throughout the region.
