CLEAN-Air(Africa) is a distinguished Global Health Research Unit, funded by the UK government's National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). This initiative is a collaborative partnership of leading public health academics, researchers, and clinicians from the UK and several sub-Saharan African countries, including Cameroon, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda.

The organization is dedicated to conducting high-quality research aimed at informing equitable scaling of clean cooking solutions for global public health. Its primary focus is to significantly reduce the burden of disease attributable to exposure to household air pollution (HAP), which results from the combustion of polluting solid fuels and kerosene. These traditional cooking and heating methods contribute to over 680,000 premature deaths annually in sub-Saharan Africa, surpassing the mortality rates of malaria and HIV/AIDS in the region.

CLEAN-Air(Africa) addresses this critical public health issue by generating robust research evidence to support the development and implementation of national policies that promote access to and adoption of clean household energy. The unit also demonstrates the profound positive impacts on health and climate that arise from populations transitioning to cleaner fuels. Furthermore, it plays a vital role in strengthening health systems, empowering community-led prevention strategies to combat household air pollution, and fostering a new generation of public health communicators.
