Green Energy Park: An International Hub for Renewable Energy Innovation

The Green Energy Park is a pioneering international platform dedicated to testing, research, and innovation in solar and renewable energies, strategically located in the green city of Benguerir, Morocco. Inaugurated on January 12, 2017, this initiative was established through a collaborative effort by IRESEN (Institute for Research in Solar Energy and New Energies) in partnership with OCP and UM6P (Mohammed VI Polytechnic University). As the first platform of its kind in Africa, Green Energy Park is designed to cultivate synergies and foster excellence among various Moroccan research institutions, while simultaneously expanding knowledge and expertise through robust partnerships with leading international research centers, universities, and industrial stakeholders.

State-of-the-Art Infrastructure and Research Capabilities

The platform is equipped with cutting-edge infrastructure tailored for advanced research and development across the entire renewable energy value chain, spanning from fundamental component science to complex system integration. Its facilities include comprehensive photovoltaic test platforms with capacities ranging from 120 to 200 kWc, capable of evaluating five distinct technologies: crystalline silicon (c-Si), amorphous silicon (a-Si), Copper Indium Gallium Selenide (CIGS), Cadmium Telluride (CdTe), and Organic Photovoltaics (OPV). Furthermore, Green Energy Park hosts a 1 MWe Concentrated Solar Power (CSP)-Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) pilot plant, dedicated to advancing new generations of modular thermo-solar power solutions. Specialized CSP test platforms are available for both national and international pilot-scale projects, complemented by over 3000 m² of indoor laboratories for the meticulous characterization of solar components, including photovoltaic cells, modules, and solar reflectors.

Targeted Research and Development Activities

Research activities at Green Energy Park are meticulously aligned with addressing critical national and African energy challenges. Key areas of focus encompass innovative solutions for water treatment and desalination utilizing solar energy, the development of advanced photovoltaic modules specifically engineered for arid and semi-arid desert climates, and the creation of novel thermal and electrical energy storage systems. The park also prioritizes the advancement of industrial applications for solar thermal energy. Through these targeted research endeavors, Green Energy Park plays a pivotal role in facilitating technological transfer and fostering bidirectional scientific cooperation within the global renewable energy sector.
