The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is a pivotal government body in India, tasked with advancing the development and deployment of new and renewable energy sources across the nation. Its comprehensive mandate encompasses policy formulation, program implementation, and fostering research and development to accelerate India's transition to a sustainable energy future.
MNRE spearheads a wide array of initiatives in key renewable energy sectors, including solar, wind, bio-energy, small hydro, and cutting-edge technologies like green hydrogen and energy storage systems. Through its various divisions and associated organizations, the Ministry drives national programs such as the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, aiming to provide free electricity through rooftop solar, and the PM-KUSUM scheme, which supports farmers in adopting solar pumps and achieving energy independence. These efforts are complemented by the Solar PV Module PLI Scheme and the Green Energy Corridor project, designed to bolster domestic manufacturing and integrate renewable energy into the national grid.
The Ministry also oversees several autonomous institutions and public sector undertakings, including the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE), Sardar Swaran Singh National Institute of Bio-Energy (SSS-NIBE), Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Limited (IREDA), and Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). These entities play crucial roles in research, development, project financing, and implementation. Furthermore, MNRE is a key player in international collaborations, co-founding and supporting the International Solar Alliance (ISA), an inter-governmental organization dedicated to promoting solar energy globally. India's cumulative installed renewable energy capacity has seen significant growth, reaching over 258 GW, securing its position as a global leader in both solar and wind power capacity.
