Overview

The New York City Environmental Justice Alliance (NYC-EJA) is a prominent network of community-based groups established in 1991, dedicated to empowering environmentally overburdened low-income neighborhoods of color across New York City. NYC-EJA organizes its member groups to advocate for critical city and state-wide environmental justice issues, fostering a collective voice to mobilize support and resolve complex challenges. The organization distinguishes itself by highlighting key environmental justice policies that impact citywide conditions, requiring innovative problem-solving, and by ensuring the direct involvement of people of color and other stakeholders in leadership roles.

For over thirty years, NYC-EJA has been at the forefront of significant City and State campaigns to advance environmental and climate justice. Its leadership has been instrumental in landmark initiatives such as the Waterfront Justice Project, NYC’s first citywide community resiliency campaign, and the historic 2014 People’s Climate March, the largest climate mobilization in history. The alliance has also achieved legislative successes, including NYC’s first waste equity law, the Transform Don’t Trash NY campaign, and its pivotal role in securing the 2019 NYC Climate Mobilization Act through Climate Works for All. Furthermore, NYC-EJA led the NY Renews coalition to pass the Climate Leadership & Community Protection Act (CLCPA), recognized as one of the most aggressive climate action laws among U.S. states, which notably inspired President Biden's Justice40 Initiative.

NYC-EJA's current advocacy is guided by its 2024-2025 New York City Climate Justice Agenda, which prioritizes just transitions and comprehensive, community-based approaches to climate action. The organization's campaigns span critical areas including Community Resiliency, Waterfront & Coastal Resilience, Waste management, Energy policy, Transportation justice, and addressing Extreme Heat & Air Quality. These efforts demonstrate a holistic commitment to environmental equity, directly influencing urban infrastructure, energy systems, and public health within the broader power systems and energy industry landscape.
