The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) is an autonomous body that represents all 257 local governments across South Africa. It operates with a national office and nine provincial offices, serving as the unified voice and advocate for the interests of local government throughout the country. SALGA is dedicated to promoting and protecting these interests while simultaneously elevating the overall profile of local governance within the South African developmental state.
SALGA's core mandate focuses on supporting local government transformation within a dynamic and diverse operating environment. The association provides comprehensive guidance and resources to its member municipalities on critical aspects such as municipal finance, audit outcomes, strategic planning, information and communication technology (ICT), public accounts, and treasury reporting. Beyond direct support, SALGA plays a vital role in national dialogues and initiatives, advocating for local government's position on significant policy matters, including disaster management, climate change adaptation, road traffic regulations, and the regulatory framework for electricity trading licenses. The organization actively fosters innovation through programs such as the Municipal Innovation Recognition Awards and facilitates collaborations to address complex challenges in areas like rural development, environmental sustainability, heritage preservation, and tourism. As a Schedule 3A public entity, SALGA maintains stringent accountability for its finances and performance, reporting annually to the South African Parliament, underscoring its commitment to good governance and financial stewardship.
