Company Overview and Research Focus

The UNINOVA Institute, established in 1986, is a multidisciplinary, independent, and non-profit research institution located in the metropolitan area of Lisbon, employing approximately 150 individuals. Founded by the Faculty of Science & Technology of the University Nova de Lisboa (FCT-UNL), industrial associations, a financial holding, and numerous companies, UNINOVA is committed to achieving excellence in scientific research, technical development, advanced training, and technology transfer. The institute leverages its laboratory departments and specialized research facilities to generate impactful publications and foster innovation.

Engagement in Power Systems and Industrial Innovation

UNINOVA plays a significant role in critical sectors, including power systems and industrial manufacturing. A notable undertaking is the "Big Data for Next Generation Energy (BD4NRG)" project, which addresses the challenges of a decentralized energy system. This initiative leverages big data and AI technologies to enhance decision-making in smart grids, overcoming barriers such as the lack of standardized big data architectures and regulatory frameworks for data sharing within the energy sector. Furthermore, UNINOVA's expertise extends to adapting distribution electrical grids to climate change, as evidenced by its involvement in relevant debates and research.

Advancing Manufacturing, Health, and Sustainability

Beyond energy, UNINOVA leads and participates in numerous European and national projects focused on industrial manufacturing strategies, digital health, and environmental sustainability. Projects like MODUL4R, AIDEAS, and AgileHand aim to achieve flexibility, rapid responsiveness, and sustainability in manufacturing lines, encompassing specialized mould manufacturing, flexible assembly of PCBs, and smart handling solutions. In the digital health domain, initiatives such as XpanDH and TeleRehaB DSS contribute to expanding interoperable digital health solutions and AI-based decision support systems for rehabilitation. Additionally, the TEC4GREEN Mobilizing Agenda prepares the agro-industrial sector for future technological and environmental challenges, promoting sustainability by minimizing environmental impact.

Collaborative Ecosystem and Technology Transfer

As an active partner of Madan Parque, UNINOVA also functions as a business facilitator and accelerator, incubating Micro and SMEs by providing comprehensive support for entrepreneurial activity. This collaborative approach, combined with its advanced training and education programs, ensures that UNINOVA not only conducts cutting-edge research but also effectively transfers knowledge and technology to industry, contributing to economic development and innovation across various high-tech fields.
