The Iceland Renewable Energy Cluster (IREC) operates as a pivotal, membership-based cluster organization that unites public and private entities and institutions across the entire energy value chain in Iceland. Established formally in 2013, IREC initially focused on geothermal energy but expanded its scope in 2018 to encompass a broader spectrum of renewable resources, including hydropower, wind power, and Power-to-X technologies. The organization leverages Iceland's extensive experience in natural resource utilization to foster a robust and innovative energy sector.

IREC's core mission revolves around enhancing the competitiveness of its members, the broader Icelandic energy industry, and society at large. By actively promoting collaboration among diverse stakeholders, both domestically and internationally, the cluster drives innovation and creates shared value through various projects and initiatives. Key activities include organizing significant industry events like the Iceland Geothermal Conference (IGC), managing the IREC Investment Fund, and facilitating specialized working groups, such as the Innovation Group of IREC.

Through these comprehensive efforts, IREC supports the advancement of Iceland's renewable energy capabilities, particularly its strong geothermal sector via the dedicated "Iceland Geothermal" initiative. The cluster is committed to promoting progress through knowledge exchange and strategic collaboration, thereby positioning Iceland as a leader in sustainable energy development.
